Pleasant encounters of the first kind.
As I stroll through the aisles, my keen Abarth eye notices a Fiat 600 gearbox displayed vertically on a counter at the Monteferri stand. 'We show the 5th gear kit for the 600 gearbox,' young Flaviano explains in English. ‘It was designed by Paola,’ he adds, introducing us to his engineer mother, who took the time to explain how to install the kit and the various options available, including race ratios. Monteferri Costruzione Ingranaggi, a manufacturer of special gears for a variety of cars, is based in Rome.
Further on, once again my eye is drawn to glass containing polished castings. "A new cylinder head for the Ferrari 250 SWB. We make new parts for classic cars, from cylinder heads to gearboxes, intake manifolds and pumps. Next time you are in Italy, come and visit us at Modena Motori,' says Luca Amedei. Invitation noted.
